Backs in mixed-media; “Lucy” an Aug Moreau bronze and glass sculpture is our coffee table in Preston’s parlor; we have drawings, photos, sculptures, and various other pieces scattered throughout the common areas in the inn. Well, as you may have guessed there is a story behind them. It all started before we purchased the Inn and became innkeepers. ![](https://www.moreheadmanor.com/wp-content/uploads/20220116_142008-300x249.jpg)In 1992, the then “rookie” police officer, Daniel, running in hot pursuit of a suspect, slid down a ravine and injured his knee. He successfully apprehended the suspect, but his knee suffered. A few painful weeks later, it was determined that Daniel needed surgery to repair his torn ACL. Outpatient surgery was the plan. All checked in and prepped for the procedure, he was given an epidural. ![](https://www.moreheadmanor.com/wp-content/uploads/Mexico3-300x250.jpg)The surgery starts, and the Orthopedic surgeon realizes that this is will take a little longer than the three hours that was planned, so general anesthesia was then administered. Daniel’s knee was in pretty bad shape. Six whole hours later, my nerves a wreck, the surgeon appears to tell me (his bride-to-be) and his parents that everything was repaired and that Daniel should be back to his normal life in a few weeks. Since the surgery took longer than initially planned, they decided to keep him overnight.![](https://www.moreheadmanor.com/wp-content/uploads/20220116_142344-300x274.jpg) Daniel experienced a headache during the night, a common side effect of general anesthesia. His headaches continued and got worse over the next few days. The doctors determined that he was experiencing were spinal headaches resulting from puncturing his spinal cord during the epidural. So…..what initially started as a 3-hour outpatient surgery turned into a 2-week stay in the hospital. My Mom sat with him at the hospital every day for those two weeks. I’d drop her off on my way to work and stop by to pick her up and see him in the evenings after work. ![](https://www.moreheadmanor.com/wp-content/uploads/20220116_141100-225x300.jpg)When Daniel was released we brought him home to an adjustable hospital bed in the middle of our living room and a CPM device. He still had headaches, which were experienced when standing or sitting in an upright position. He was instructed not to take any pain meds that included aspirin so that they could eventually draw blood to patch the puncture in his spine. Excedrine became his friend. Two weeks after being released from the hospital, the doctors were able to do a blood patch to stop the spinal fluid from leaking, and the headaches stopped. During this time, both Daniel and I became aware of just how important your back is to your health and well-being, and we’ve been collecting backs every since. ![](https://www.moreheadmanor.com/wp-content/uploads/20220124_1759111-141x300.jpg) Our first piece, a charcoal print, the back of a macaw was purchased from Wayne, an art student, attending the College of Charleston in SC in 1992, before we owned the Inn. This piece was Wayne’s semester project. We ran into him proudly showing it off to a friend at one of the shops near[ the straw market](https://www.thecharlestoncitymarket.com/) in downtown Charleston. Daniel approached him and convinced him to sell it to him. Of course, he was apprehensive because his grade weighed heavily on this project. Daniel told him if he could create it once, that he could do it again, and if he or his professor was not satisfied with the outcome to have him (Wayne’s professor) give him a call, and he’d drive back to Charleston with the original. Wayne signed the print and named it “Back Series”. We’ve never heard from Wayne or his professor. We have imagined that he’s somewhere in the world creating brilliant artwork. We have purchased other back pieces throughout our travels, and since opening the inn, several of our friends and guests have blessed us with backs. This baseball blockbuster movie stars Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon, and Tim Robbins. Released in 1988, it is usually listed as one of the best sports movies of all times. In fact, Sports Illustrated magazine named it the most popular sports movie of all time. [**RollingStone**](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-lists/best-sports-movies-rocky-rudy-71467/bull-durham-1988-29506/) ranked it the 6th best sports movie of all time. The film focuses on a star pitcher and a veteran catcher playing for the Durham Bulls. The most popular minor league baseball team today. The film was shot at the ballpark that was home to the Durham Bulls at the time as well as various houses and other places throughout The Bull City. Although it was not actually filmed in Durham, the 2019 movie [**The Best of Enemies**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_of_Enemies_(2019_film)) is based on the true story of civil rights activist Ann Atwater (played by [**Taraji B. Henson**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taraji_P._Henson)) who faced off against C.P. Ellis, Exalted Cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan, in 1971 Durham, North Carolina over the issue of school integration. In an interview, Taraji explained, “I was attracted to this story since hate is taught, it can be unlearned, and love is way more powerful than hate.” The movie is about the desegregation of Durham county schools and how two unlikely people became lifetime friends. [**Brainstorm**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainstorm_(1983_film)) is a 1983 science fiction thriller about a group of researchers who invent a way to record the physical and emotional experiences of others so that others can experience them as well. Problems arise when the potential for abuse is discovered and things get out of control. This movie starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood has scenes shot at [**Research Triangle Park**](http://blog.moreheadmanor.com/2016/11/morehead-manor-best-durham-bed-and-breakfast.html) and Duke University. Brainstorm also gained notoriety as Wood’s last film, as she sadly passed away during its production. [**The Handmaid’s Tale**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Handmaid%27s_Tale_(film)) is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s famous novel. Starring Faye Dunaway, Robert Duvall, and Natasha Richardson, this 1990 movie set in a dystopian future, tells the story of a young woman who is able to bear children (an increasingly rare trait) and the fallout she faces from a totalitarian regime. The novel was set at Harvard, but the movie was shot at Duke University and other locations around Durham including on the streets near **[Brightleaf Square](http://blog.moreheadmanor.com/2014/09/durham-shopping.html)**. [**Kiss the Girls**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss_the_Girls_(1997_film)) is the film adaptation of James Patterson’s novel of the same name. This movie was set and filmed in Durham and the surrounding area. Morgan Freeman plays a forensic psychologist (Alex Cross) whose niece is kidnapped. Ashley Judd plays a woman who escaped from the same kidnapper and helps him on the case. In its first five months in theaters in 1997, this film grossed over $60 million alone. The movie [**Arthur Newman**](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Newman_(film)) starring Colin Firth, Emily Blunt, and Ann Heche, is about a man and woman who leave their pasts by taking on the identities of the owners of the empty homes they break into. During this process, they begin to explore what it is they ran away from. Released in 2012, this was filmed in part at Durham’s [**North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics**](https://www.ncssm.edu/), along with other locations in the Triangle. The Full Frame organization also presents free documentary screenings throughout the year. Tickets go on sale beginning April 1, 2016. Films are only scheduled once during the festival. However, a handful of films (mostly festival award winners) will have an encore screening on Sunday afternoon. This is Althea Gibson’s documentary. She was the queen of the highly segregated tennis world in the 1950s. Archival materials and interviews shed light on a tough, talented young woman whose gifts drew people of influence to support her rise as a star on the world stage. With piles and piles of old, rare & antique books, it’s like walking into a museum – only one where you can take the items home. Wentworth and Leggett also carries prints, maps, political buttons, postcards, and magazines – some of which date back hundreds of years. Take a walk inside and you’ll find another impressive collection of books, records, tapes, cassettes, and comics. The stacks twist round and round through the right half of the store, so you can continue your exploration of publishing history through all kinds of subjects. We are going to take it one rep at a time, one step at a time, and leave no doubt about anything that we do on and off the field.
