Looking for things to do in Durham this summer? Warm evenings, outdoor spaces, live performances, and local food make this one of our favorite times of year to welcome guests.

Spend Time Outdoors in Durham

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the fresh air here. Some of our favorite outdoor activities in Durham are peaceful, easy to reach, and easy to build into a relaxing day.

Stroll Through Sarah P. Duke Gardens

Sarah P. Duke Gardens is one of the first places we recommend to guests. The walking paths, shaded benches, and seasonal blooms make it a lovely place to slow down for a while.

You can also plan a bite while you’re there. The Gardens Café is located at the Garden Gateway’s Barnes Welcome Center, and The Terrace Café is located in the Bartter Family Terrace House.

Pro Tip: Guests can also pre-order our Picnic in the Park package to enjoy at the gardens or back here at the Manor!

Walk Or Bike The American Tobacco Trail

The American Tobacco Trail is a great choice when you want to move a little. You can walk, bike, or enjoy a quiet stretch outdoors at your own pace. You can choose a shorter section for an easy outing, or plan a longer ride if you want to make it part of your day.

Visit The Duke Lemur Center

For something truly unique, plan a visit to the Duke Lemur Center. Lemurs are the most endangered mammals on Earth, and the center gives visitors a chance to learn more about their care, conservation, and habitats.

Pro Tip: Tours are popular, so book ahead and check the schedule before you go!

Catch a Game or a Live Performance

Some of the best things to do in Durham happen after the sun goes down. Between baseball games, Broadway performances, concerts, and local events, there’s always something happening nearby during the summer months.

See the Durham Bulls in Action

A Durham Bulls game is one of the classic summer activities in Durham. The atmosphere at Durham Bulls Athletic Park feels lively and relaxed, making it a fun evening even for guests who don’t usually follow baseball.

Friday night games and post-game fireworks are especially popular. It’s even more fun when you arrive early and enjoy the energy building around downtown before first pitch.

Enjoy a Show at DPAC or the Carolina Theatre

DPAC Durham and the Carolina Theatre Durham are two of the best places in Durham for summer entertainment. DPAC regularly brings major Broadway productions, concerts, and touring performances to the city. The Carolina Theatre hosts films, live music, comedy shows, and special events in a beautiful historic venue.

Pro Tip: Summer schedules fill quickly, especially for popular productions, so it’s always a good idea to book tickets early!

A night out adds something special to a summer stay. It gives you a reason to dress up, head downtown, and come back with a story from your trip.

Explore Durham’s Food And Downtown Scene

One of the best parts of summer in Durham is how easy it is to turn a simple afternoon or evening into something memorable. Downtown has great restaurants, local cafés, breweries, and walkable spots that make it easy to enjoy more of the city between plans.

Plan Dinner Before A Show

Dinner before a show is one of the easiest ways to enjoy downtown Durham. If you’re heading to DPAC or the Carolina Theatre, you’ll find plenty of restaurants nearby for a relaxed meal before the performance.

Several restaurants near DPAC also offer pre- and post-show specials, which makes planning your evening even easier. Need help narrowing it down? We recently shared a few of our favorite Durham restaurants!

Durham’s food and drink scene continues to be one of the city’s biggest draws. Start the morning with coffee, stop by the Durham Farmers’ Market, plan lunch somewhere local, or spend the evening at a nearby brewery or distillery.

Give yourself time to enjoy an extra stop or two. There are plenty of local Durham breweries and distilleries that we absolutely love!

Spend Time Around The American Tobacco Campus

American Tobacco Campus is a great place to walk, meet friends, or enjoy downtown’s energy. The historic brick buildings, outdoor spaces, restaurants, and nearby entertainment make it an easy addition to your plans.

Look For Summer Festivals And Arts Events

Durham’s events calendar brings music, dance, art, food, and community celebrations throughout the warmer months. The American Dance Festival is a summer favorite, and events like the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival and the CenterFest Arts Festival show how creative and community-minded the city can be.
